An extensive review of the conditions of the pyric environment that affect crown fire initiation and fire spread in conifer stands will be presented. The WP1 will describes the most important models that are used in operational fire simulation systems to predict crown fire initiation and spread. A survey of the methods used to inventory surface and canopy fuels will be also delivered. The fuel treatments which affect fire behavior in conifer stands will be presented and evaluated through literature screening. Furthermore, an extensive review of the existing current software which are used on operational basis in other countries will be presented.
